WSU baseball upsets No. 7 Oregon State

Apr. 8—PULLMAN — Eighteen hours after being shut out and mercy ruled in their home ballpark against the No. 7 Oregon State Beavers, Washington State returned to Bailey-Brayton Field and punched back.

"Yesterday, I was quite embarrassed," WSU baseball coach Nathan Choate said. "I thought our players were, our whole program was embarrassed. We were better than that.

And so I thought the response today was really appropriate. " WSU 7, Oregon State 6. The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the third inning and led 7-3 heading into the ninth before OSU put three runs across home plate in the final frame and that phrase that Cougar fans collectively loathe began to creep into consciousness.

Then the reported crowd of 1,125 fans — many of them wearing OSU orange and black — witnessed Cougar closer Scott Rienguette gun one more pitch over the plate and OSU's Bryson Glassco come up empty. The upset was complete. On Monday, the Cougars were embarrassed, 18-0.

On Tuesday, they were victorious. Wazzu avoids disaster The outfielders didn't even move. With two outs and one on base in the top of the ninth, OSU's Bryce Hubbard struck a 2-1 pitch from Rienguette so well that the Cougars simply watched it fly over the right-field fence.
