Fifth place in the Premier League will secure Champions League qualification.

Arsenalโ€™s 1-0 win over Sporting CP at the Estadio Jose Alvalade last night secured a top-two finish in the UEFA season coefficient rankings, which means that a fifth Champions League qualifying spot for the Premier League has been confirmed. With 7 games left in the season, Liverpool FC are somehow in fifth with 49 points, just one point above Chelsea in sixth. For a team that started the season with aspirations of contending for the domestic and continental titles, the mere fact that Liverpool is worried about making Europeโ€™s top competition pretty much says everything about how the season has gone.

Not making the Champions League would be a catastrophe, and the ripple effects would surely prompt changes across multiple departments of the club.
