First-inning errors enough for Bishop Moore in pitchers dual with Orangewood

Bishop Moore Catholic managed just three hits against Orangewood Christian on Tuesday night, but it was a pair of first-inning errors that allowed the Hornets to plate two runs and hold on for 3-1 victory. A projected pitchers dual between staff aces JT Costello of Bishop Moore and Max Sakala of Orangewood played out as expected, with Costello getting the upperhand. Costello struck out 10 Orangewood hitters in a complete-game victory to move him to 4-0 on the season.

Sakala (7-1), a junior Miami commit, struck out 12, but suffered his first loss of the season. “Yeah, it was a pitching dual and both arms are really good arms,” Bishop Moore coach Tony Mehlich said. “JT has gone the distance for us before and this is his fourth start in a row (in 12 days) and he has earned every accolade he has received.

“He had 16 Ks in a no-decision against Winter Park last week, so he’s doing a great job for us. Going into the playoffs, he’s our hottest arm right now. ” Bishop Moore, now 20-2 on the year, got on the board early.

After Sakala struck out the leadoff hitter,  Danny Garcia reached on an error and Tyler Lomas singled. Garcia came around to score after a throwing error when he tried to steal third and the ball ended up in left field. Lomas scored on a double by Will Kane and the Hornets had all they would need.

Kane had two doubles, two of only three Bishop Moore hits. Mehlich said manufacturing runs is what his team does. “I think experience goes a long way.
