But things aren't getting any better. Cade Horton, their star pitcher who was the runner-up in the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year race, is dealing with an injury to his forearm. But there was initial hope he could return at some point this season.

That hope is no more, as Craig Counsell announced to reporters, including Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network , that Horton will undergo season-ending UCL surgery. This is some awful news for Horton and for the Cubs.

Not only is Horton out for the year, but his recovery is going to be a long and uncertain one. This is about the worst news that the Cubs could've gotten on Horton's injury, which was known to be trending in the wrong direction earlier this morning.
