Patriots release another veteran linebacker
The Patriots parted ways with another veteran linebacker. The position has become a bigger draft need this offseason

According to ESPN, the team has informed Marte Mapu that they intend to release him. The 26-year-old played in 17 games last season as the Patriots ’ backup linebacker and core special teamer. He finished with 25 tackles, five passes defended, a forced fumble and an interception.
Marte is the third reserve linebacker the Patriots have moved on from this offseason. The team also released veteran backup Jahlani Tavai. They opted against tendering Jack Gibbens a restricted free agent contract, and he signed with Arizona.
The series of moves leaves the Patriots weakened at the linebacker position, and at this point, it’s expected they’ll add to it in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft later this month. The Patriots return starters Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss. They signed K.
