Bill Chisholm on whether the Boston Celtics need a new arena
Would it make more sense for Boston to own their own arena, instead of renting?
When his ownership group took control of the Boston Celtics this past offseason, there was a lot of speculation that the Celtics might try to build their own arena under the tenure of new majority owner Bill Chisholm. But the private equity investor pushed back on such a move at least in the immediate future, leaving the door open to revisiting such a question in the future should a need arise. But in a recent, wide-ranging interview with Boston Globe beat writer Adam Himmelsbach, we got an update on where Chisholm sees the potential of a new Celtics arena – and it doesn't sound like his views have shifted considerably.
"It’s pretty much the same as it was at the beginning of the season," said Chisholm. "The philosophy there is the same. " "The Garden is a great place to play," he added.
"It’s consistently ranked one of the best places in the league for player and fan experience. It’s loud, a lot of energy, and it’s got a storied history. " "My starting point is if we can make it work, we’d love to stay where we are," continued the Celtics majority owner.
"And making it work means improving the fan experience and the player experience. If we can do those things and remain where we are now, that’s great. " "And if that doesn’t work there, we’ll think about other places.
