A gallon of gas is approaching the price of a mini plate lunch. With household expenses rocketing, it is becoming more difficult to pinch pennies — that is, if we still were manufacturing them. And it won’t stop raining, which is resulting in costly repairs to roads, sewers, schools and homes.

We all have money problems, to be sure, but the University of Hawaii athletic department has a significant one. The UH football and basketball programs completed successful seasons, and the men’s volleyball team is on track to contend for a national championship. They have tapped nearly every business, restaurant, bank, blue-collar union, airline and California Hotel slot winner for additional financial support.

And tapped them again. And again. UH has had golf tournaments, banquets and bowling outings; sold apparel, including game-worn jerseys, and cards.
