SEC Softball Standings: OU leads Texas ahead of Red River Showdown
The Oklahoma Sooners hold a two-game lead in the SEC standings heading into a big-time Red River series in Austin.
The Oklahoma Sooners took a two-game lead in the SEC standings after their weekend sweep of the Kentucky Wildcats and the Texas Longhorns ' series loss to Alabama. But the two teams have gotten to this top-five showdown in Austin on different paths. The last two weekends, the Longhorns have played a top-25 series against Alabama and Texas A&M.
The four teams the Sooners have played in conference play thus far are in the bottom five of the standings. The defending national champions will be the toughest team the Sooners have faced all season, especially in SEC play. After a strong start to the season, Alabama looks the part of a national title contender after taking two of three from the Longhorns.
Their pitching hasn't been as good in SEC play as it was in nonconference, but it's been effective enough. From the plate, the Crimson Tide have come through with timely hitting to climb to second place in the conference. Florida, Arkansas, and Texas A&M remain in striking distance of first place in the SEC standings.
They're just three games back in the loss column, and after Oklahoma plays Texas, the Sooners will face the Razorbacks and Aggies down the stretch. The Sooners may have a nice lead in the standings, but there's still a lot of softball to be played, and this weekend's series against the Longhorns will have SEC title and NCAA tournament seeding implications.
