Football club condemns racial abuse of player

Sheffield Wednesday called the abuse "deplorable" [PA Media] Sheffield Wednesday FC has condemned online racial abuse directed at one of its players on social media. The club did not identify the player targeted but said the "disgraceful and completely unacceptable racist messages" were sent following Monday's 1-1 draw against Leicester. It said it was working with the relevant authorities "to bring the offenders to justice".

South Yorkshire Police said: "Officers are investigating and working with Sheffield Wednesday FC to provide support. " In a statement on social media, the club said: "Our zero-tolerance stance remains steadfast and unequivocal. Racism is cowardly.

It has no place in society. We stand together, and only together can we stamp it out. " It added: "It is not the first time we find ourselves in this position.

It is deplorable on every level. " In 2024, the club was fined £12,500 after a fan made a racist gesture towards Coventry City midfielder Kasey Palmer.
