Arsenal u21s seal play-off place Arsenal under-21s have secured their place in the Premier League 2 play-offs once again, with Max Porter’s side guaranteed a top-16 finish and still in the hunt for a higher seeding going into the final round of fixtures. Since the 2023/24 campaign, Premier League 2 has operated as one combined division made up of all category one academies, with the top 16 progressing into a knockout bracket. Arsenal have now reached the play-offs in every season under that format, and their place this year was confirmed by other results midweek before a 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday kept alive the possibility of a top-eight finish.

That matters because the play-offs are seeded by league position, with first hosting 16th, second hosting 15th etc, meaning there is still plenty for Arsenal to play for before the knockouts begin. For Porter, reaching the knockouts again is an important step in the development of his group, not simply a reward for consistency over the league season. The under-21s head coach said it was “brilliant” to see his side back in the knockout phase.

“We experienced it last year,” Porter said, “we played Manchester City, it was one of our best performances of the season, but we still came up short. “I think for what the players need to go into next, to feel that edge of it being all on the line for one game, you’ve got to find a way to perform under that kind of pressure. “I think that’s what the playoffs give us, so hopefully we can get another good (run).
