Golf: Seaside mixes it up, Astoria springs an upset

The Seaside boys team had a mixed week on the golf course, while rival Astoria pulled off a good upset to start off league season. On the girls side, Seaside golfers continued to shoot well to start off the season. Seaside boys bounce back from rough day The boys golf team at Seaside picked a good time to have what head coach Jim Poetsch described as a rough day.

After a bit of a layoff, the Seagulls traveled to Banks for another high-level tournament at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. Seaside came home 15th of 22 possible scoring teams with a 358, well off what the Seagulls were shooting last season. However, Poetsch said he believes the young team’s shooters are on the verge of figuring everything out.

Top scorer Xanh Quang shot a 79 and finished 14th for the Seagulls on Thursday, April 2. Will Haag was the second scorer with a 92, Tobin Santos shot a 93, Gunner Norman shot a 94 and Landon Nofield shot a 97. Columbia River High School of Vancouver, Washington won the tournament with a team score of 318, while Camas High School of Washington finished second with a 325.

Banks was the first Oregon school to place as they finished third with a 327. Seaside had a chance to bounce back with a league match against St. Helens on Friday, April 3.

The Seagulls improved their score by 17 points shooting a 341 en route to their first league victory of the year. Quang took the individual title with a 75. Seaside showed great improvements behind him as they had two of their other golfers also break into the 80s.
