ESPN predicts big year for LSU football transfer wide receiver
ESPN’s Greg McElroy says that Kansas State transfer WR Jayce Brown is emerging as the favorite to become the WR1 at LSU in 2026.
LSU Football has begun its second week of spring practice, and with that second week comes heaps of news — both good and bad. The bad, of course, is the news of edge rusher Gabriel Reliford tearing his ACL , a massive loss for a defense that’s entering 2026 with sky-high expectations. The good, on the other hand, came from ESPN’s Greg McElroy on Wednesday afternoon.
McIlroy shared that Kansas State transfer wide receiver Jayce Brown has had a great start to spring practice. “It sounds like, right now, Kansas State transfer Jayce Brown is entering in as maybe the favorite to become the go-to guy at wide receiver,” McElroy shared. Brown was the second-highest-rated receiver transfer in LSU’s top-ranked recruiting class by 247Sports.
Former Florida WR Eugene Wilson III was No. 1 in LSU’s class and ranked 13th among receivers in the portal, while Brown ranked 26th. While it's somewhat surprising to learn that Brown is emerging as the primary receiver instead of Wilson, it makes sense when you compare their roles.
At Florida, Wilson was a solid gadget receiver and showed some flashes in other areas, but he doesn’t really profile as what you want in a primary pass-catcher, with 21 of his 27 receptions in 2025 coming less than 10 yards downfield, per PFF . A talented YAC receiver is always a valuable asset, but Tiger fans learned firsthand last season that having too many receivers with that skillset can be problematic. Not to mention that Wilson has been far from reliable over the past two seasons, missing 13 games and playing in 12 during that period.
