Callum Smith’s long layoff will continue after injury axed his April 18th meeting with David Morrell Jr

(Photo by Mark Robinson/Getty Images) | Getty Images One of this month’s better fights is kaput, as Mike Coppinger reports that Callum Smith suffered an unspecified injury ahead of his April 18th DAZN main event against David Morrell Jr. Matchroom has yet to release a statement; it’s such a top-heavy show that we can almost certainly expect them to postpone the whole deal.
The McGrails and Leo Atang do not a blockbuster show make. Smith (31-2, 22 KO) is coming off one of the best wins of his career over Joshua Buatsi last February, but has yet to see action since. Inactivity has been a trend for him over the last several years; before the quick turnaround between Carlos Galvan and Buatsi, he faced layoffs of 10 months, 17 months, and 11 months between his previous fights.
Morrell (12-1, 9 KO) fought twice in 2025, dropping a decision to David Benavidez in February before battling Imam Khataev to a contentious split decision five months later. Their styles promised a firefight, so fingers crossed Smith isn’t too damaged. We’ll let you know when and if Matchroom announces their plans.
