Suarez was not completely built up since he missed time in spring training to go pitch in the World Baseball Classic. He gave up four earned runs and two homers in 4 1/3 innings of work in his debut. In his second start, on Sunday against the San Diego Padres, he gave up four earned runs in four innings of work.

After signing a five-year, $130 million deal, expectations of Suarez were higher. The veteran did not make excuses and gave a blunt assessment of his first two starts and outing against the Padres. โ€œI cannot allow that to happen,โ€ he said through a team interpreter, per The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

โ€œObviously not the way I wanted the first two starts to go. โ€ Suarez actually looked solid until the fourth inning. However, he was tagged for three runs in the fourth frame.

He started the fifth inning off by giving up a single. He was pulled from the game, and that runner came around to score. Suarez was an All-Star two years ago and had a strong case to be an All-Star last year.
