KKR vs PBKS: Will rain play spoilsport at Kolkata? IMD issues warning
Rain threatens to disrupt Kolkata Knight Riders' crucial IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens. With a strong possibility of showers and thunderstorms, a shortened game or even a washout looms, adding to KKR's early-season pressure. Officials face a narrow window to ensure a result, potentially leading to a high-octane, brief encounter.
Kolkata Knight Ridersโ search for their first win of IPL 2026 could face a major hurdle, with rain likely to play spoilsport in their clash against Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens on Monday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a strong possibility of rain impacting the fixture, raising concerns over a shortened contest or even a complete washout. Weather Adds to KKRโs Early-Season Woes KKR, yet to open their account this season, are already under pressure, and adverse weather conditions could further complicate their campaign.
Their upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants at the same venue is also under a rain threat, making it a challenging phase for the franchise. Interestingly, the corresponding fixture between KKR and PBKS last season was also disrupted by rain. Punjab Kings had posted 201/4 before KKR reached 7/0, with both teams eventually sharing a point after the match was abandoned.
IMD Forecast Signals Stormy Conditions The IMD has attributed the unstable weather to a low-pressure trough stretching from Bihar to Manipur, passing through North Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh. "The state is likely to witness another round of Kalbaishakhi storms, with the possibility of hail and thunderstorms from Sunday through Thursday. The intensity and spread of rainfall are expected to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday," the IMD said.
"The weather is expected to turn more severe on Tuesday, when Kalbaishakhi storms accompanied by winds of 50-60 kmph, lightning and rain are likely to impact Kolkata and adjoining areas. " Persistent cloud cover and heavy showers have already affected preparations, with both teamsโ practice sessions on the eve of the match cancelled due to a downpour. The Eden Gardens outfield remained under covers, with visible water patches.
