Hokies take two of three from Clemson.

The No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies opened Thursday’s three-game series against Clemson from Tech Softball Park with a 31-4 record and nine consecutive wins. However, the Tigers ended Tech’s winning streak with a 4-2 loss on Thursday afternoon.

While the Hokies outhit Clemson 7-4, VT left eight runners on base, which proved to be the difference in the game. Emma Mazzarone pitched the entire game, allowing four hits, four walks, and four runs, while striking out five in seven innings. Tech corrected things on Friday, with a 9-1 win over the Tigers.

It was yet another run-rule win for the Hokies. Virginia Tech scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Hokies scored again in the second inning to make it 2-0.

They broke things open in the third inning, when Michelle Chatfield blasted a three-run home run to make it 5-0. Clemson scored its only run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Hokies responded. Kylie Aldridge hit a solo shot, while Addison Foster smacked a two-run double to make it 8-1.
