Dumfries, 200 to remember: "A special group, we're a family. " A special milestone on a significant evening: taking to the pitch against Roma, Denzel Dumfries reached the landmark of 200 appearances for Inter. After the match, Denzel discussed the win over the Giallorossi in a post-match interview: The Dutchman’s story in Nerazzurri colours began in the summer of 2021, when Dumfries arrived in Milan from PSV Eindhoven after starring at UEFA Euro 2020 with the Netherlands.
Denzel chose the number 2 shirt for his Nerazzurri adventure and made his Inter debut on the opening day of that league season on 21 August 2021, coming on in the 84th minute against Genoa in place of Alessandro Bastoni. From that moment on, an impressive rise that has seen Dumfries develop into an outstanding wing-back, and for almost five years now, a key figure for Inter and a fan favourite among the Nerazzurri supporters. In his first season with the Nerazzurri, Denzel Dumfries threw himself into the world of Inter, working consistently and with great commitment to earn his place.
From the beginning, he closely observed his teammates and the team’s dynamics, learning as much as possible before making his first start — a match in which he delivered his first assist for Lautaro Martínez in a 6–1 win over Bologna. His first goal had to wait until that December, when he found the net with a powerful diving header in a convincing victory at the Stadio Olimpico against Roma — an opponent that would feature repeatedly in several key moments of Dumfries’ journey with Inter. During his first year, Denzel also lifted his first trophies with the club, both won in finals against Juventus: the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia.
His debut campaign ended with 45 appearances and five goals — a more than positive return for a player who, at 25, was still adapting to Italian football. The following season Dumfries scored fewer goals (two) but featured far more often: he made 51 appearances in 2022/23 across all competitions. It was another successful campaign for both Inter and the Dutchman, bringing another Supercoppa Italiana as well as a Coppa Italia.
Above all, though, it was defined by Inter’s remarkable run in the UEFA Champions League, which took them to the final in Istanbul against Manchester City. Dumfries played in 13 of Inter’s 14 matches in that Champions League campaign, also scoring his first goal in the competition during the group-stage match away to Viktoria Plzeň. The following season brought the most memorable triumph of all: Inter won the 20th Scudetto in their history after a remarkable campaign, securing the club’s Second Star after a 2–1 derby victory away to AC Milan on 22 April 2024.
