Christoph Freund says it was tough to decide to let Raphaël Guerreiro leave Bayern Munich

He came on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023 and has been a solid Swiss army knife type of player for the Bundesliga champions under both Thomas Tuchel and Vincent Kompany. In his time at Bayern, he’s made just shy (at the time of writing) of 100 appearances across all competitions, having tallied 12 goals and 8 assists from an array of deputizing as a left back, left winger, central midfielder, and even central attacking midfielder under either Tuchel or Kompany. His experience and versatility have been a surplus to requirements for Bayern with such a star-studded squad, but his presence cannot be understated, especially with the amount of injuries the squad has had the past two seasons.

In the press conference previewing Bayern’s Bundesliga clash at SC Freiburg, sporting director Christoph Freund explained how it was a tough decision to let Guerreiro go but made it clear that it is always the club’s intention to make the rest of the squad aware of these types of situations. “Rapha will be leaving us; it wasn’t easy because he’s a great guy, and has played a lot of good games, and is very versatile – a big strength of his. But we’ve always said that when we make a decision, we tell the guys, so that’s how we’ve put it.

We have our ideas about what the squad will look like in the summer, but there’s still some time until then,” he explained (via @iMiaSanMia ). Guerreiro will now be joining midfielder Leon Goretzka in leaving the club at the end of the season and it is also highly likely that Nicolas Jackson will return to Chelsea after his loan spell is technically complete at the end of this season. Elsewhere in the squad, Manuel Neuer’s contract is still set to expire this summer, but he is still taking his time to decide on whether or not he wants to extend for another year.
