Much has been written about UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma and his postgame feud with South Carolina coach Dawn Staley after their national semifinal, which the Gamecocks won to advance to the national championship game against UCLA.
It's one of those stories so big that the Wall Street Journal got involved. WSJ sports columnist Jason Gay , who writes about anything and everything in the sports world, had to bring his take to this matter. "Auriemma, a giant of the game, looked small," Gay wrote about the postgame antics.
"I figured Auriemma would clean up the mess in his postgame press conference, but instead he calmly leaned in to it, offering the pregame handshake delay as his explanation-slash-justification. He said he didnโt regret his spicy TV interview, either. " That wasn't Gay's biggest problem with what happened, though.
He couldn't get over Geno's statement of apology, in which Staley's name wasn't used. "Oof. The entire beef was with Staley," Gay writes.
