Kodi Greene's mentality has impressed Washington's coaching staff
Five-star freshman Kodi Greene has turned heads during offseason workouts at Washington thanks to his mental approach to the game.
No matter who you talk to inside the program, it's clear that every member of the Washington Huskies ' coaching staff is excited about the potential of freshman left tackle Kodi Greene. The former five-star recruit, who was ranked as the No. 1 player in California after two seasons at powerhouse Mater Dei High School, has a golden opportunity to establish himself as the left tackle along coach Jedd Fisch's offensive line during his first year of college football.
With top transfer Kolt Dieterich expected to miss the beginning of fall camp with an injury, Greene should get the majority of reps with the first team offense. At 6-foot-6 and 321 pounds, Greene is oozing with physical traits that have stood out during the offseason conditioning program and made Fisch comfortable placing him on the same track as 2025 Freshman All-American John Mills the moment he signed, but according to offensive line coach Michael Switzer, it's his mental approach to the game that also sets him apart. "His attention to detail, his preparation, his natural attributes athletically, physically stick out," Switzer said.
"You see him in the weight room, you see him on the field moving. I think it was our first day of (player-run practices), some of the older guys saw him do a backside cutoff on wide zone, and everybody starts turning heads. " "He's separated himself in terms of how he approaches his daily (routine), he's very serious about it.
He's put himself in a position to have great opportunity to come in, play left tackle, and see where he ends up this spring and how it all plays out. " Heading into his sixth year as a head coach, Fisch has never been shy about playing freshmen at any position if they prove they're ready for a big role, even at offensive line, which is arguably the hardest position to adapt to from high school to college. If Greene can continue to assert the coaching staff's statements when the pads go on during spring practice, he could establish himself as the clear favorite as the starter on Demond Williams Jr.
