Sean Payton shares funny note from 'humbling' flag football tournament
Sean Payton doesn't think current NFL players will make Team USA's flag football squad for the 2028 Olympics. Here's why.
Flag football is coming to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, but Team USA might not be full of NFL players. In fact, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton will be surprised if any current NFL players are on the squad. Payton coached one of the teams largely made up of current and former NFL players in a flag football tournament two weeks ago, and the two NFL sides were easily defeated by Team USA in a round-robin tournament.
After going 0-2 in the exhibition flag football games, Payton was asked about the experience at the NFL's annual meeting in Arizona last week. “Well, that was humbling," Payton said . "I think this.
You remember the Home Alone series, and Macaulay Culkin was inside [the house]. Macaulay Culkin was the international team, and I felt like Coach [Jim] Harbaugh and I were the two guys outside getting hit in the head with the iron and tripping over the garden hose. It’s an entirely different game.
I don’t think… Listen, it was kind of cool to be around those guys. That was a big deal. I think when this first was announced, there was this feeling there would be 10 NFL players on that roster, and I’ll be surprised if there’s one.
