While the score was close, the Canes controlled puck possession and shots.
The home team outshot the visitors 13-4 in the first period and 18-2 in the second. Overall, they had 40 shots on goal to 16 for New York. The Islanders were able to score on some of the few chances they had and jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the game, but the Hurricanes had an answer.
Jarvis scored his first on a semi-breakaway to tie the score midway through the period. The Islanders would score again to open the second but the Canes came on strong. Jackson Blake made it 2-2 off a nice play by Logan Stankoven, who won a battle on the boards and led Blake with a perfect pass.
Later in the second, the Canes took the lead and never looked back when Jarvis and Sebastian Aho hooked up for another shorthanded goal. Jaccob Slavin created this play with a picture perfect back-handed bank pass off the side boards to Jarvis who then fed Aho. The Hurricanes have a league best 12 shorthanded goals.
Then just 24 seconds into the third period, Jarvis roofed in a shot to make it 4-2 and the Canes just needed to hang on from there. With about a minute and a half left Anders Lee scored to make it 4-3, but Brandon Bussi made a couple of key saves to close things out for the home team. The Canes have now won three games in a row.
