VAR Reverses Gerard Martin's Red Card Against Barcelona
VAR reverses Gerard Martin's red card against Barcelona, sparking controversy with VAR assistant urging a yellow card despite initial reaction. Atletico de Madrid is now highly frustrated over this ruling.
In a game riddled with controversy, VAR decided to reverse Gerard Martin’s red card for Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday. The referee, Mateo Busquets Ferrer, initially showed Martin the red card for an alleged challenge by Thiago Almada. However, TV replays revealed that Martin had caught Almada with his studs during a follow-through after winning the ball.
Despite this, VAR assistant Mario Melero López urged Busquets to reconsider and ultimately awarded the yellow card, which was deemed sufficient by Mundo Deportivo’s refereeing analyst César Barrenechea Montero. This decision has left Atletico de Madrid furious, especially considering their own penalty in the first half when Nico Gonzalez received a red card for a foul on Lamine Yamal.
