Harbor 1973-74 team won conference crown, advanced to regional tournament

Losing seasons from 1964-1968 cost Ed Armstrong his job as Harbor’s head basketball coach in 1968. But Armstrong, who left Harbor at that point to become an assistant football coach at Edgewood, remained on good terms with the Harbor administration. That allowed him to return to his former school when then-coach Larry Bragga left to become Jefferson High School principal in 1973.

But Armstrong, who left Harbor at that point to become an assistant football coach at Edgewood, remained on good terms with the Harbor administration. That allowed him to return to his former school when then-coach Larry Bragga left to become Jefferson High School principal in 1973.

Armstrong justified the faith in him by leading the Mariners to the regional tournament. In 2008, he was inducted into the Ashtabula County Hall of Fame. His best year was his first one back, when he took a group led by stars John Coleman and Jim Bradley to a 19-4 record.

Coleman and Bradley, both now in the ACBF Hall of Fame, were joined by starters Ray Henton, Al Ziegler and Matt Kent. Other contributors that season included Dan Juhola, Doug Pardo, Jeff Skaruppa, Chris Cox, Byron Sargent and Kevin Lillie. Armstrong’s assistant coach was Bob Short.
