CLEVELAND — Baseball is back in Cleveland. The Guardians returned to Progressive Field for their home opener against the Chicago Cubs Friday evening. Cleveland finished 4-3 against the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles, considered two of the better teams in the majors, to start the 2026 season.

The first of a three-game series against Cubs, who are also expected to challenge for the National League Central Division title, Friday went to the Guardians 4-1 in front of 36,396 fans. Cleveland improved to 5-3 and won consecutive games for the first time in the young season. Chase DeLauter had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Cleveland offense.

DeLauter and Gabriel Arias each hit home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. With one out, Arias put a Hunter Harvey 2-2 pitch 358 feet over the right field fence. After a Steven Kwan walk, DeLauter sent a 3-1 pitch into the right-field seats for a homer to extend Cleveland’s lead to 4-1.
