Former Indiana Mr. Basketball leaving Notre Dame via transfer portal
Notre Dame men’s basketball is set to lose a key veteran guard after a season derailed by injury and roster uncertainty.
The exodus from South Bend continues, which is exactly what was expected in the coming days. Notre Dame guard Markus Burton has told On3 that he plans on entering the transfer portal, adding another major loss to a Fighting Irish roster that has been depleted this offseason. Burton was Notre Dame’s top offensive weapon this season before a left ankle injury sidelined him, as he averaged 18.
5 points, 2. 8 rebounds and 3. 7 assists per game when healthy.
The Penn High School product in Mishawaka, Indiana, emerged as one of the ACC’s most productive guards and became the centerpiece of coach Micah Shrewsberry’s backcourt over the course of three seasons. He was also Mr. Basketball in the state of Indiana in 2023.
His departure comes after a 13-18 season in which Notre Dame missed the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and failed to reach the ACC Tournament, deepening questions about the program’s direction. In three seasons under Shrewsberry, the Irish are 41-56 overall. Burton is one of several Notre Dame players who have either entered or are expected to enter the portal.
