Richard Hughes and Arne Slot have taken steps to strengthen the backline into the future - through the signings of Mor Talla Ndiaye, Jeremy Jacquet, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Giovanni Leoni. But those players are young and at the outset of their careers. Losing Konate - as well as Van Dijk and Gomez - will mean the Premier League champions are short of top-quality experienced defenders.
The Anfield side have been reported to be chasing defenders like Nico Schlotterbeck and Alessandro Bastoni. Both of those fit the bill as experienced, left-sided centre-backs with bags of quality.
