Hawaii baseball coach Rich Hill played the odds to even the Big West series. Isaiah Magdaleno pitched a three-hitter over six innings and Grant Garman threw two hitless innings to help the Rainbow Warriors defeat UC San Diego 6-3 at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla, Calif. A crowd of 518 saw the ’Bows avenge Thursday’s 10-9 loss to improve to 16-12 overall and 6-8 in the Big West.
The league-leading Tritons fell to 13-14 and 9-2. “That was a great victory in response to a very difficult night before,” Hill said. This three-game Big West series was moved up a day, starting on Thursday instead of the usual Friday, to avoid playing on Easter Sunday.
Hill held back Magdaleno, who has been the Rainbow Warriors’ series-opening starter, to pitch in his usual Friday slot. The Tritons reached base in five of Magdaleno’s six innings, but Magdaleno stranded eight, including five in scoring position. He gave up a solo home run to Nick Costello and two singles to Aiea High School graduate Ryson Ujimori.
