The 27-year-old, younger brother of former world lightweight champion Anthony Crolla, found himself on the deck four times in what was a crucial fight for his career. Even so, he managed to get back up each time and eventually landed a heavy stoppage against the previously unbeaten Irishman.

But there were concerns after the fight, as Byrne needed to be taken to hospital. Fortunately, reports later confirmed he was in good spirits. Crolla initially celebrated his win but later calmed down and showed respect for his opponent during a post-fight interview with Eddie Hearn.

Crolla produces comeback KO against Byrne Photo by Mark Robinson/Getty Images William Crolla’s career was hanging by a thread after he was dropped four times in the co-main event of Matchroom Boxing’s Altrincham show. But he turned things around with a brutal seventh-round knockout of Glenn Byrne. The fight world’s attention may be on Derek Chisora versus Deontay Wilder, but Eddie Hearn put on an entertaining card north of London, and this penultimate bout stole the show.

British Boxing Board of Control-sanctioned fights don’t have a three-knockdown rule, so Crolla was able to continue after being dropped multiple times. He got off the canvas four times before landing a fight-ending shot in the seventh. The referee stopped the bout immediately after Crolla landed a legitimate punch from above that floored Byrne.
