NHL Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Pickups: Defensemen, April 4 – Avs' Toews, Sens' Spence Fill In
Grab Devon Toews and Jordan Spence as Cale Makar and Jake Sanderson are out. Unleash Cole Hutson for offensive surges.
On every game day this season, THN Fantasy will highlight players and goalies for fantasy hockey managers to stream, roster or utilize in standard leagues and/or DFS games. Players and goalies highlighted for streaming in standard leagues are rostered in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues. Mike Matheson, MTL at NJ (49% rostered) - FanDuel $5,600 Potentially lots of opportunity here for Matheson to extend his points streak to three games.
The Devils are winning games but they’re also getting scored on a lot, which bodes well for a scorching Habs team that’s won seven in a row. Even if Matheson doesn’t score any points, he’s a reliable shot blocker. Devon Toews, COL at DAL (39% rostered) - FanDuel $4,300 Cale Makar is not expected to play due to injury, which means Toews will step in on PP1 while Sam Malinski and Brent Burns remain on PP2.
True, the Avs power play has been horrendous all season, but this is opportunity that Toews doesn’t get at all when Makar is in the lineup, and the more often he shares the ice with Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas, the more likely he’ll register a point. Toews notched two assists in his previous game and look for him to play big minutes despite a tough matchup. Cole Hutson, WSH vs.
BUF (15% rostered) - FanDuel $4,800 Hutson’s been featured regularly in this space since turning pro and for good reason. He scored his second goal of the season in just his eighth NHL game. He’s turning out to be a big volume shooter with seven shots against the Devils and averaging close to two shots per game for the season.
