The situation centres on compliance with the league’s player participation policy. Concerns emerged following Giannis’ extended absence from action.

His last appearance came on 15 March against the Indiana Pacers, raising debate about his fitness and readiness. This has been a notably disrupted season for the two-time MVP. He has made just 36 appearances, the lowest total of his NBA career, fuelling scrutiny around how his condition has been managed.

NBA receives conflicting accounts from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee Bucks Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the NBA has gathered testimony from multiple sides as part of its investigation. The league has spoken with Antetokounmpo, the Bucks and team medical staff. According to Charania, the accounts provided have not aligned.

Milwaukee informed the league that Giannis is not ready to play, while also indicating that the player is pushing to return. ‘The Greek Freak’ presented a different version to investigators. He stated that he is able and wants to play but has not been cleared by the organisation, creating a direct contradiction.

This discrepancy has intensified focus on the Bucks’ internal handling of the situation. The league is now assessing whether any inconsistencies breach participation rules designed to protect competitive integrity. The uncertainty also extends to Giannis’ future with the franchise.
