Barça begin a series of three games in 11 days against the Colchoneros , with the last two deciding their fate in the Champions League. It’s easy to look at their European clashes as the most important games, but Saturday’s contest is arguably just as big, especially from a Blaugrana perspective. The Catalans play after Real Madrid this weekend, with Los Blancos facing a tough away match against Mallorca just a few hours before Barça play Atleti.
Real Madrid could cut Barça’s lead at the top of the table to one point, but there’s also a chance the Blaugrana could increase the gap. In any case, three points are a must. For Diego Simeone and Atleti, this match doesn’t mean quite as much in theory.
The Colchoneros are out of the title race and not in any real threat of finishing outside the Top 4, so they can focus entirely on the Champions League and the upcoming Copa del Rey Final against Real Sociedad. They could easily not worry too much about Saturday’s game, but this one also means a lot for them. Atlético famously destroyed Barça in the first half of the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie almost two months ago, but were thoroughly outplayed in the second leg as Barça almost pulled off a historic comeback.
