Track and field: Willmar Cardinals leaning on top talent

Apr. 3---- Co-head coaches Kody Fossum and Brady Krupa, who are back for a second spring, will not be having any issues with numbers in their track and field program any time soon. Willmar's track and field team features 80 athletes.

That number marks a 15-person increase from 2025. It is due to the enormous freshman class that Willmar boasts. "We've got 40 freshmen boys and girls this year — they almost make up over half of our team," Krupa said.

"It will be exciting to see what the future is going to look like. " The future, whether this season or ones to come, is promising. Willmar's middle school track and field team has 144 athletes.

"That's a huge bonus when thinking about the potential for what could be coming in the future," Fossum said. "Every year is a great building year for us. We have a great group of kids.

" Its current group is led by a core contingent of upperclassmen, who are tasked with filling the void left behind by a graduating class highlighted by Sully Anez and twin sisters Erin and Lauren Eilers. All three runners are competing in college with Anez at South Dakota State University, Erin attending Augustana University and Lauren at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. "We're optimistic," said Krupa, a 2019 Willmar grad who competed for the Upper Iowa men's track and field team in college.
