The Logansport Berries baseball team is hoping for a better season health-wise which would help them reach their annual goals. The Berries are coming off a 16-14 season in what was their first year playing in the Hoosier Conference and Class 3A. It wasn’t quite what they looking for but they had several freshmen and sophomores who gained valuable varsity experience.

It was their second straight 16-win season and it was the second straight year they played without their projected starting shortstop, as Isaac Russell missed most of 2024 and Cayden Walker missed 2025 which likely cost them a lot of runs scored both years. The Berries enter this season without the graduated Deagan Kitchel, an Indiana North All-Star who now playing at Wabash College. But they had a lot of guys gain varsity experience last year which should help this year’s campaign, said coach Dan Frye, who is entering his sixth season at the helm.

“We’re returning eight seniors,” Frye said. “Obviously Josh Middleton’s a mainstay on the pitcher’s mound. He’s going to be our Game 1 starter.

I think he’s earned that right over the last two years. Jose Portilla, he’s going to play third base and pitch. Bryson Herr out in center field will be a three-year starter out there.

Grady Alexander behind the plate. Then we have some others, Hudson McKinney, he’s back, he’s played for the last two years, some varsity. He’s injured right now waiting for an MRI on Tuesday and seeing what’s going on with his wrist.
