Tom Weller/dpa Former Germany coach Joachim Löw has denied he's set to make a comeback to football to take the coaching job at the Ghana national team. "No one from Ghana has officially spoken to me," he told broadcaster Sky on Friday.

The news portal Ghana Soccernet reported that Löw was close to accepting the coaching position on a short-term deal focused on the 2026 World Cup this summer after the Ghana football federation parted ways with coach Otto Addo. Addo was dismissed on Tuesday after a 2-1 defeat to Germany in a World Cup tune-up game the day before. The report said that an official confirmation is expected in the coming weeks.

The portal cited "several sources" for their information but didn't name them. Ghana technical director Winfried Schäfer, however, reacted with surprise when asked by dpa to comment the report earlier on Friday. He said he had no knowledge of an impending deal with his compatriot Löw.

Schäfer is not responsible for the search for a new coach and that's a task for Ghana federation president Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku. Löw coached Germany from 2006 to 2021, winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. Since his retirement after Euro 2020, he has rejected every job offer.

However, he recently told broadcaster Sky that if he were to take another job, it would be with a national team. "Given my experience, that would also be the best option for me," he said. The World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico starts on June 11.
