On the very first pitch Susac saw in his MLB career, he was swinging. It was a breaking ball from the Mets' David Peterson, and the righty hitting Peterson lined it the other way for a sharp single to begin his time with the San Francisco Giants . The ball was thrown out of play for Susac to keep, but he was far from done in his first major league game.
Susac ended up going 3-for-3 and working a walk. He's the first catcher with those stats in his MLB debut since Mike Piazza back in 1992, according to OptaStats . Tough to have a better debut comparison than a Hall of Famer.
Susac, 24, has had high expectations with him for a while. He was a first-round pick (19th overall) by the Athletics in the 2022 MLB Draft. The Giants acquired him this offseason, and while Patrick Bailey's defense has him entrenched as the starter, Susac can begin to make the case for more playing time.
