Celtics' Derrick White explains how he got his start as a shot-blocking guard

Hint: it involves a rambling wreck -- and a nerf hoop.

If you follow the father of Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White on social media, you likely know that Richard White clocks his son's play both in real time with his posts and in a more methodical manner he shares later on after the game. And given his own role in helping Derrick hone the defensive skills he now celebrates with a pithy meme, it's not hard to understand why. Paternal pride and a dash of Nerf foundations are directly tied to that practice, as the younger White revealed in an appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show this week.

"Dad is definitely a proud father," said Derrick, who said that growing up, his father "used to put a little Nerf hoop on the closet door. " "I had to make the rule that no dunking was allowed because that was too easy for him," added the Celtics floor general. "I was a little guy," said White.

"So layups only, and I was able to get some blocks from there, and I think it translated to me blocking some shots. " "You can't walk about 10 feet in my house without finding a basketball hoop somewhere," said the Colorado native, now a proud father himself. "We've got a lot of basketball around.

" It remains to be seen whether Hendrix will grow into an elite rim-protecting guard, but if there's a way to help it along, White has a blueprint to work from. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Blue Wire: https://tiny. ee/CdKp iTunes: https://tiny.
