Yahoo Sports

It seems Kevin O'Connell told J.J. McCarthy about the team's intention to sign Kyler Murray before the news broke.

Vikings fans entered this offseason expecting a very fluid situation at quarterback. Minnesota spent little time in free agency before bringing in serious competition, signing former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray to a one-year deal. Head coach Kevin O'Connell had the right mindset to touch base with J.

J. McCarthy before the move, and here is what he had to say: “I was honest with him. I said ‘We are going to elevate the room as a whole’… We know that there’s a standard to playing that position, that we need, through a competitive environment, get all of our QB’s to play to that standard, and when we do that we’re gonna win football games.

” Now, is this truly going to be a quarterback competition in training camp? Depends on who you ask. The writing is on the wall that Murray is walking in as the expected starter in 2026, but time will tell.
