11x NFR qualifier Marty Yates injured his knee, and will now undergo surgery with Dr. Tandy Freeman with Justin Sports Medicine.

In 2026, we have seen multiple comeback stories playing out, but unfortunately also many injuries and setbacks. That is just how rodeo goes, it is not if the athletes get hurt, but when. This time, it is 11x NFR Qualifying tie-down roper Marty Yates who is having to step back from the arena for a bit.

Yates was competing in slack in Waxahachie, Tx when what should have been a routine early spring run turned into a season altering injury. Now, one of the most consistent tie-down ropers in the game is facing surgery, and an uncertain road back this year. Reports tell us taht Yates suffered a bucket-handle meniscus tear with displacement, along with a tear in the lateral meniscus.

There is also damage to the lateral collateral ligament, though that portion is not expected to require surgical repair. It sounds as though the primary concern now centers around potential nerve involvement, something that wonโ€™t be fully understood until surgery. The procedure is scheduled for April 15 and will be performed by Dr.

Tandy Freeman, one of the most respected names in rodeo sports medicine and a longtime leader in treating injuries across the sport. If anyone can get Yates back in the arena as quick as possible, it is Tandy. This is a major knee injury however and in the calf roping, the knees are crucial.
