Vincent Kompany played a key role in news deal for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies

Kompany was a big proponent of Davies getting his FC Bayern contract extended last year.

For board member for sport Max Eberl, it was sort of his baptism by fire period stepping into his role with the German Rekordmeister even though he had plenty of experience elsewhere in the Bundesliga with his time at both RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The timing of the extension was key for Bayern as they pressed for the Bundesliga title last season as well as the latter stages of the Champions League, but his cruciate ligament injury roughly a month after his extension was one of the worst strokes of luck he’s had since he’s been a Bayern player. Getting such a serious injury in the third place match of the CONCACAF Nations League with Canada ahead of crunch time in Bayern’s season is less than ideal, but Davies’ struggles with injury have even carried on to this season with his hamstring problems. Nonetheless, Davies is expected to return to action at some point this month and hopefully be fit on time for the Champions League quarterfinal clashes vs.

Real Madrid. A 100% fit and firing Davies is something Vincent Kompany is certainly longing for, and it was recently revealed that the Belgian manager played a key part internally at the club in pushing for Davies’ most recent contract extension (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia ). It’s been reported that Kompany campaigned heavily for the Canadian left back to have his contract extended in a period where the club’s hierarchy was really focused on trying to reduce the overall wage bill with the anticipation of a lucrative summer transfer window — they were still, at the time, under the impression they would land Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

He’s the type of player that Kompany feels compliments his system exceptionally well, he’s just been unfortunate with how much time he’s missed with injury since last March. His incredible pace essentially makes him an insurance policy in defense, especially on the counters, with how quickly he’s able to complete his recovery runs and quell dangerous phases from the opposition. This is something Kompany really feels will be key in beating Real Madrid over two legs later this month and a big reason why he’s hopeful Davies is fit on time to be involved in at least one of the two legs.
