NFL says Puka Nacua's situation is 'under review'

An NFL spokesman says the league is reviewing Puka Nacua's situation but wouldn't say if he'll be subject to discipline.

Puka Nacua has made headlines this offseason for his off-field behavior, most notably being sued for assault and battery after he allegedly bit a woman on New Year’s Eve. Prior to those allegations being made and the lawsuit being filed, Nacua checked into a rehab facility in Malibu, where he’s currently going through a program to “improve his overall behavior,” his attorney says. On Thursday, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told Jacob Camenker of USA TODAY that the league is reviewing Nacua’s situation, though McCarthy declined to say whether Nacua will be subject to discipline under the league’s personal conduct policy.

The NFL has officially acknowledged the troubles Nacua has faced but declined to reveal if he would be subject to discipline under the league's personal conduct policy. "The matter is under review," NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy told USA TODAY Sports in a statement. McCarthy did not clarify whether the league was reviewing the lawsuit, Nacua's decision to enter rehab or both.

The Rams have been aware of the incident since it took place on New Year's Eve, and Sean McVay has backed the 24-year-old receiver publicly by saying he trusts Nacua and hopes he's a Ram for a "really long time. " McVay said, "I trust this kid's heart," acknowledging that these are learning opportunities for Nacua as he grows. There's no question Nacua is deserving of a long-term deal with the Rams based on his performance each season, but the team also needs to be able to trust him as a leader and face of the franchise.
