Allen pushes South Lyon East girls soccer past rival South Lyon
Junior Samantha Allen scored the winning goal with seven minutes left.
With 10 underclassmen on the roster, South Lyon East’s veterans must step up in clutch moments. Junior Samantha Allen did just that in a 2-1 win over rival South Lyon on April 1. The third-year varsity player scored the winning goal in the 73rd minute, giving the Cougars (1-0-1, 1-0-1) their first win and notching her first career goal.
“Samantha is a hell of a player,” coach Pete Stoyanovich said. “I think she played the whole game today, a full 80 minutes, and played with a lot of grit. She played a very, very tough game.
” In 34-degree temperatures and whipping winds, scoring chances were limited. The Cougars appeared in control after Lila Samluk played a ball into the box for Emma Quenby, whose goal made it 1-0 seven minutes into the second half. But Natalie Henn, one of East’s top returning seniors, left with an ankle injury, and South Lyon (0-2-0, 0-2-0) capitalized.
Lucie Harvey scored off a corner kick with just under eight minutes left. Given the weather conditions and East’s inexperience, Stoyanovich expected a 1-1 finish. Which makes sense.
