The Boston Red Sox have been undergoing some major changes to the roster in recent years, most notably with the departures of Rafael Devers in a trade with the San Francisco Giants and Alex Bregman in free agency to the Chicago Cubs .
Those are two massive losses, and one's that the Red Sox have been struggling to overcome. But the team has been trying to rely on 21-year-old superstar prospect Roman Anthony to take another leap in 2026. It's not gone well.
Ian Browne of MLB. com believes that the Red Sox were putting too much pressure on Anthony to perform in the wake of the Devers and Bregman departures. While Anthony needs to be better, Boston cannot put this much pressure on such a young player.
Red Sox need to ease up pressure on Roman Anthony "Considering that Anthony is all of 21 years old, the amount of expectations that have been put on him to carry the Red Sox in a post-Rafael Devers and post-Alex Bregman world has been too much," Browne writes. Anthony is human after all, as his early-season struggles this year have turned into a 1-for-18 after Opening Day. His struggles for Boston's offense are not a major surprise, as great hitters go through struggles and slumps all the time.
