But in the early going of the 2026 MLB season, it has worked out just fine that Bichette ended up with the New York Mets instead. Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets in free agency that includes a couple of opt-outs -- essentially, he can choose to become a free agent again next offseason. The Blue Jays seemingly backed off from paying Bichette a whopping $42 million per year.
Their pivot was Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto on a four-year, $60 million deal. And with the caveat that it's still early, the Blue Jays have had no reason to miss Bichette right now. Bichette is 3-for-27 to start his Mets career.
Meanwhile, Okamoto is already being regarded as a potential MLB star just a week into his time in the league. This is just about early season vibes, and right now, they're clearly better with Toronto's new infielder than with the guy they lost.
