Originally expected to be a rebuilding team in 2026, the St. Louis Cardinals got off to a strong start, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in their first series of the year. Heading into Wednesday's game, they had an opportunity to win another series after splitting the first two games with the New York Mets .

They did just that, defeating New York in a low-scoring affair. Matthew Liberatore went six innings, allowing only one run, opposing Freddy Peralta, who also allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings. Both teams remained tied at one until the 11th inning, when Masyn Winn ended the game with a single that drove in rookie JJ Wetherholt.
