The Chicago White Sox designated Jedixson Páez for assignment on Wednesday. Boston lost the 22-year-old as a Rule 5 Draft pick in December. Chicago replaced Páez by selecting the contract of veteran relief pitcher Lucas Sims from Triple-A Charlotte.

Páez had never pitched above High-A Greenville for Boston, but the White Sox gave the right-hander an Opening Day spot. He struggled to handle the huge jump, allowing six hits, three walks and six runs in three innings with zero strikeouts. The 2021 international signee from Venezuela relinquished three of those runs in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to the Miami Marlins.

Páez served up a two-run homer to Griffin Conine in the eighth inning. All Rule 5 Draft picks must remain on their new team's 40-man roster, so the White Sox couldn't demote Páez. He'll instead go on waivers, giving teams other than the White Sox and Red Sox a chance to put him on their active roster.
