Bombs away: Big hits propel Hartselle over Athens in ranked matchup
Apr. 1—HARTSELLE — A week after being named the No. 1 softball team in Class 6A, the Hartselle Tigers certainly looked the part.
In a game that featured six lead changes, Hartselle took control late, scoring 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to run-rule No. 6 Athens 17-7. "It's exciting because they're a really good team and you have to play your best to beat them," Hartselle head coach Anna Hanners said.
"Our team was disciplined at the plate today, and it paid off big time. " Hartselle has been explosive at the plate all season, with so many total home runs that Hanners wasn't sure how many the team had. Tuesday was more of the same as the Tigers blasted three including two from RC Wolf, who finished with a grand slam and seven RBIs.
"Honestly I was just thinking base hit every time I was up (at the plate)," Wolf said. "I just wanted to work the count, keep my head down and drive it, and they ended up going over the fence. " Katie Norgard added the other home run and finished with two hits and three RBIs.
Abby Lopez led Athens with three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs With several players that have hit multiple home runs this season, it's become a race among them to see who can hit the most. Norgard leads the team currently, but with two more on Tuesday, Wolf is in the thick of the race. "This team has something special to it.
