LSU baseball is nearing a return to the Top 25 after its series win over Kentucky, according to the latest USA Today Coaches Poll.

LSU baseball may be clawing its way back to national relevancy, according to the latest USA Today Coaches Poll . The Tigers’ start to the season was disastrous, dropping midweek games to McNeese and UL-Lafayette and losing three straight series to Sacramento State, Vanderbilt, and Oklahoma. After that series against the Sooners , LSU had only two Top 25 votes, and the trust that Coaches Poll voters once had in the Tigers’ talented roster and all-world coaching staff seemed to have run out.

In the latest edition of the poll, however, the Tigers appear to have regained some of that belief. LSU’s impressive two-game finish in their series against Kentucky didn’t earn them a spot in the top 25, but it did make them the top vote-getter among teams outside the rankings, with 56 votes. 17-10 Tigers!

On Saturday , starting pitcher William Schmidt and reliever Zac Cowan combined to shut out the Wildcats, with Schmidt’s performance earning serious praise from LSU head coach Jay Johnson after the game. “I believe William is emerging into one of the best pitchers in the country,” Johnson said . “He’s had three really good starts now in the league.
