Beau Welling is designing the new layout on the shores of Cedar Creek Lake an hour's drive from Dallas.

Long Cove, a luxury lakefront community in Malakoff, Texas, has announced plans to develop a new private golf club with a course to be designed by Beau Welling. The golf club will be called The Old Mine Club, and the course will be named The Canary. Crews already are working on the course on the shores of Cedar Creek Lake about an hour southeast of Dallas.

Welling – who works alongside Tiger Woods’ TGR Design as well as creating his own courses and renovations– has been given rollicking terrain left over from past mining operations. With a planned opening in 2027, the course will feature plenty of elevation changes and water on 10 holes, most notably on the back nine. Two holes will play over coves in the lake to island fairways created by lignite coal mining tailings, two others will play along mounds formed from past dredging, and three holes will be placed along a channel formed by mining excavations.

“After years of planning and promising conversations with the leadership at Long Cove, our team is excited to see work underway,” Welling, founder and CEO of Beau Welling Design, said in a media release announcing the course. “It’s a rare opportunity to work with such a unique piece of land, and we’re excited to add to the legacy of this great property with a new championship golf course that the membership will enjoy for years to come. ” The club also will include a 20,000-square-foot clubhouse overlooking the lake as well as health and fitness amenities.

Along with a range and short-game area, there will be a lake house that serves as a fishing hub. “Beau Welling Design and our team have been working on The Canary for nearly five years now, and we are excited to invite members to enjoy what will be an unrivaled golf experience,” Don McNamara, founder of Long Cove, said in the media release. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Beau and his team in transforming this land that was once the site of abandoned coal mines and a railroad into a striking lakefront course that will delight players and should be considered as one of the best layouts in the state.
