Texas A&M senior CB poised to 'break through' in 2026

Yahoo Sports

Texas A&M senior CB Julian Humphrey has looked the part this spring, and is in the running to earn a starting spot this coming season.

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko enters his third season at the helm, and through six practices, several new and returning players have stood out, including senior cornerback Julian Humphrey, who returned to the program for a final season after dealing with injuries, while fellow senior corner Dezz Ricks' rise last season prevented the Georgia transfer from truly making an impact. Now, after veteran corner Will Lee III declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, Humphrey is on his way to competing for a starting spot opposite Dezz Ricks this coming season, while redshirt freshman CB Adonyss Currie, one of the key blue-chip prospects in the 2025 recruiting class, will serve as Humphrey's primary competition as the No. 2 outside CB.

Considered one of the fastest players on the roster, Humphrey's decision to transfer from Georgia, where he was a reliable starter, was understandable given the Bulldogs' rising stars in the secondary, and while he joined an already stacked room, his decision to return not only provides speed on the outside, but should further help Dezz Ricks and the Tennessee transfer Rickey Gibson to reach their elite potential. Listing several other newcomers from the transfer portal and returning players, AggieYell's Jaxson Callaway is equally confident that Julian Humphrey is on a path towards earning a starting spot after his hot start through six spring practices. "He brings an elite combination of athleticism and speed to the secondary, with the ability to match up against just about any receiver in the country.

That has shown up early this spring, and as a fourth-year player, he looks poised to finally break through. He’ll be competing with Adonyss Currie, who redshirted his freshman season but has also generated plenty of early buzz. Still, Humphrey appears to be in a strong position to take that next step after a challenging first year at Texas A&M, despite his experience contributing at Georgia.

" Over his past three seasons at Texas A&M and Georgia, Humphrey recorded 28 tackles and six pass deflections, and is considered one of the better man coverage corners when healthy.
